Korea – our digs

This is the long overdue apartment-tour post as it’s four months since we moved into our little 1 room office-tel in Pyeongchon, Anyang City, Korea. Small living spaces are pretty standard in urban Korea and we’ve done our best to make ours homely, bearing in mind that we will only be here for 1 year. Despite it being a little on the small size, for 1 year it’s perfect – especially since we don’t need to pay for it (our contracts at the school include housing for the year.)

So the outside of our apartment kind of looks like a prison cell. The bars on the left of the picture are on front of our bedroom window – don’t know who decided that a view of the indoor communal close is the sort of thing that people want in their bedroom but nevermind, we got some nice pink Ikea fabric (thanks Mum!) to cover it. Instead of a conventional key lock we have this snazzy machine that we enter a code into, so no more losing keys on drunken nights out (Fraser) which is good!

This is our bedroom (which is literally a bed, inside a room) with aforementioned pink fabric, and obligatory Robbie the dog picture. In the corridor picture you can see the bedroom on the right next to the front door, and also a sliver of bathroom which is too small to get inside and photograph. Opposite the bedroom we have a built-in wardrobe and a big fridge freezer. Yes, that is our entire kitchen you can see on the left!

This is our living space and kitchen, complete with recently purchased toaster! We didn’t have a comfy couch when we first moved in but after a quick scout around the streets next to nearby apartment blocks, we found this suite in almost perfect condition ready to be thrown out!

Collection of miniature cuddly toy keyrings won by Fraser at the local batting cage (mentioned in previous posts – place you can go hit a baseball inside a cage in exchange for cuddly toys…).

The birdcages are wall stickers that we bought at local supermarket!

Our garden!

Some more cuddly toys won by Fraser, along with our stash of takeaway menus which we don’t use as our Korean is most definitely not good enough to make the order phonecall yet!

Tarsiers in the Philippines

Tarsiers are the worlds smallest primate (about 5-6 inches tall) and absolutely adorable! Unfortunately, they are now endangered (like many beautiful creatures in this world), and only exist in limited numbers in a few locations in Asia, one of those locations being the Philippines. There was a sanctuary only an hour away from us so we were lucky enough to see them. The ant you can see in the picture is life-sized by the way!

Handpainted signs and tricycles in the Philippines

One of the things I loved most about the Philippines was the colorfulness of everything.

Some more sun, sea and sand in the Philippines…

Some more pics from our trip including the most amazing handmade flipflop shop EVER, a stormy day and the beginnings of a small tornado out at sea (!!!) and also our lovely home for the week which was a little palm-thatched hut (20 seconds walk to the beach) surrounded by beautiful tropical vegetation.

Sun, Sea and Sand in the Philippines

We spent a week on a little island called Panglao, just off the bigger island of Bohol in the Philippines on our summer holiday from the school. It was unbelievable to be somewhere so tropical and idyllic and we had an absolutely amazing time.

We did some major chilling out which invloved a lot of reading and eating and drinking. The round thing on the spoon is a fish eyeball, which was eaten by Fraser! We also went snorkeling on a coral reef which was probably the highlight of the trip and we saw all sorts of amazing sea-creatures including clown fish (finding nemo), a sea turtle, barracudas, parrot fish and many, many more.
